Additional Services and Information

Migration Trauma and Loss, Transition Counselling, Retrenchment, Retirement, Death, Divorce

Closely allied to the above discussion of anxiety and depression, we mention an important cause of anxiety and mood disorders - major life changes which result in loss and trauma and consequent anxiety and depression. A major area here is assisting in effecting change in migrants' perceptions of the challenges that face them, enabling or empowering them to deal more effectively with their changed status or changed identity in their changed society. Another major source of anxiety and depression is death or divorce, retrenchment, change of career or retirement. We believe we have created a unique and particularly useful website in this regard and we emphasise that a major part of what we do in this area is working with people to reinvent themselves - establishing new beginnings, new identities, new careers. We offer the following which might be read as a platitude. We believe we live by it and we help our clients to live by it as well.

"Life is exhilarating when you see opportunities instead of problems, challenges instead of difficulties, solutions instead of obstacles".

And you do have a choice!

Internet or e-Therapy

We also mention that we offer our services internationally as well. A few years ago, we were one of the pioneers of the then new field of internet therapy. To this end, we have a dedicated site which offers internet therapy, both on an individual and corporate level. We mention that early in 2006, our e-therapy site was rated as the best internet therapy site, world-wide and this assessment forms part of a major Ph.D. research study currently being defended at a prominent university. Once the Ph.D. degree has been awarded, we will, with delight, offer the official source of such rating.

Our general practice is not, however, confined to the mood disorders and we mention that we also focus on the devolution of complex management skills to the general public and to other professionals.

Here is what else we do.

Management of Difficult or Challenging People.

We use our group work and educational expertise to help managers, teachers, general practitioners and other professionals to deal with others whom they may describe as difficult or challenging.

Management of Ambivalence or Loss of Motivation.

Another skill we impart is the capacity to deal with ambivalence and loss of motivation in others, which may lead them to fail in life. This may include parents struggling to deal with children or teenagers, or school principals dealing with their staff, or those who struggle with addiction, problems advancing at work, or in their sport and leisure activities.

Management of Culture Clashes

An major and crucial part of our work involves the reframing, normalising and management of the difficulties which arise when different cultures interact in the workplace.

Couples Counselling - with emphasis on 'mixed marriages'

An extremely large part of one of the practitioners' practice is involved in couples counselling where the partners come from different ethnic or cultural backgrounds. Books have been written on 'Mars and Venus' but we deal with marriages where the partners come from different galaxies!! This challenging area has proven to be amongst the most rewarding.

Change Facilitation

We have mentioned some of the effects of immigration on identity, self-esteem, the family and the marriage. One of the areas we specialise in is in the facilitation of change - of career, of identity, of status and so on and we again invite you to look at: www.lossesintranslation.com

We thank you for your time in having been through our site and we hope that some of it has been useful to you.
